B. Listening: Rewilding The Workplace
A Message From The MD: 2024

I’ve reflected on what brings me joy, a lot, this year. 2024. Broadsword’s best on record for so many reasons, with a multitude of highlights including becoming a B Corp.
Leading the team through months of deliberate action for a better world, it has been wonderful to certify this year and join a community of like-minded businesses who put people, planet and purpose first. But in terms of my health, this has been a very challenging year for me. I’ve found myself having to adjust to a shift in my life. The person I was before remains, but I’ve had to find a new centre of gravity. Blend the old with the new. At times, I’ve certainly felt more old than new! And looking after myself has become a top priority.
My recent visit to Hong Kong really highlighted how seamlessly the city blends the old and the new. It is a unique urban tapestry that bridges the past and the future. Historic landmarks and vibrant traditions are preserved while the city embraces cutting-edge architecture with a dynamic modern lifestyle.
Last week, we held our Christmas dinner at Brunswick House, a celebrated space in London known for its eclectic interior and juxtaposition of the old and new. Built in the early 18th century, this Georgian townhouse has served as a grand family residence, offices for the London and South Western Railway and a public house. In modern times, it was restored and repurposed as a café, bar and event space – a venue that perfectly reflects London’s resilience in preserving its layers of history amidst change.
At the end of every year, as we approach the next, reflection is inevitable. For me 2024 has been pivotal. It’s helped me learn how to recalibrate, preserving my own layers, while also carefully adding new ones. This year, I’ve realised it’s not about reinventing oneself, or one’s agency. What you were before will always be a part of what you become. But learning to cope with the unpredictability of life when the unexpected happens — that is real adaptability and it’s what makes us interesting and relevant as people; as vibrant and colourful a landmark in life, as Hong Kong and London.
People who are special and unique. Those you enjoy spending time with by the fire, sharing stories, the old and the new.
Happy Christmas.
