B. Listening: Purposeful Playtime

Podcast episodes
Serious Play might seem like somewhat of an oxymoron. How do colourful bricks fit into the corporate world? We speak to the Founder of Jump in Puddles and trained facilitator of LEGO’s unique approach to play that helps organisations innovate, manage change and collaborate.

In this episode Janine introduces LEGO Serious Play as a tool to use within events, workshops, change strategies, problem solving and training — as well as the many benefits to this distinctive approach.

Increasingly, now with understanding the impact of AI, I’ve realised that there’s much more importance on aspects such as creativity, communication, collaboration, curiosity, and experimentation. I realised that there was a link between all of these really important human skills, and that is play”.

Play, just like experiences, is inherently human after all. It’s how we’ve acquired fundamental skills and knowledge from birth — like communication, collaboration and creativity. As LEGO is tactile, it facilitates these core skills. Created by professors of strategy, putting together principles of neuroscience, play and storytelling, it’s a tactic that engages parts of our brain that aren’t typically activated in standard meetings or conferences through physical engagement.

Thinking with your hands allows you to explore your mind, but also allows other people to understand it. People find it really difficult to understand other people’s abstract ideas if something’s never been done before. But if you make it into a tangible representation, people can see it”.
